Lincoln Appears at HRS Scientific Sessions
The Heart Rhythm Society Scientific Sessions meeting is one of the largest cardiovascular conferences nationwide. The Lincoln Project presented two abstracts concerning the OHPND cohort. The first examined the unique descriptors of the veteran population represented in the OHPND cohort. Representing nearly 20% of OHPND cases in eastern North Carolina, veterans share characteristics that distinguish them from non-veterans in the cohort. The Lincoln Project is dedicated to serving the veteran population and plans to support additional research to inform intervention strategies that can specifically target veterans.
The second abstract highlighted rates of substance abuse, mental health encounters, and psychotherapeutic drug prescriptions within the OHPND cohort. Substance abuse and mental health disorders are not only associated with poor health outcomes, but also require sometimes complex, community-based interventions. High rates of substance abuse, mental health encounters, and psychotherapeutic drug prescriptions indicate complex disease states that negatively impact overall health and well-being. Community-based strategies that recognize the complexity of these health determinants will be vital to improving health in areas targeted for intervention.
